What Does It Take To Become A Leader?

Just the other day a dear member approached me and stated “I am  saved by grace through faith in Jesus Christ our Lord and love God with all my heart and believe the Word and doctrines” and then asked “How can I be a leader in Highland church? Well, I gave her eight words and it is spelled H I G H L A N D

Have a purpose. What is God’s purpose for your life? What is your mission? What is your creed? What has he called you to? If you have already known this, it will consolidate and solidify everything you do. It will be like a compass to guide you to your destiny.

Inculcate a relationship With God
You were made for God so get to know Him better, love Him higher and serve Him greater. And that is what Christ our Savior did for us on the cross of Calvary. He must be the supreme passion of your life and not be relegated to a secondary or an incidental thing. Get to know God through His word and get to love Him through in your praise and prayers.

Give God your very best.  Can I know I really know God? Very simple. Check out your calendar, your checkbook and your priorities.  Do you give the Lord the first of everything? The first fruits of your labor, the first day of your week, the first hour of your day, and the first acknowledgement in everything you do.

Highest call of every disciple or leader is to love God and love others.  Love is the greatest and the wisest investment we will ever make. It will undoubtedly bless God, the church. the community and yourself.

Learners make leaders. A mind or for that matter a life is a terrible thing to waste. The best way not waste your mind, life or your gifts is to keep on learning. We are never too late or too wise to learn. Attend the Mid Week Teaching, the special meetings, seminars, the disciple class or the Bible College etc. A good leader is always a good learner.

Assimilate not polarize. Highland Church is a heterogeneous body – a kaleidoscope of Christians from all walks of love. Don’t let the distinctives keep you from your love and service to the Lord within the church or the community. Get to know and love the difference in people, giftings and functions. HIGHLAND is not spelled ISLAND. We cannot do without the other and they cannot do without us.

Network with one another. Spiritual growth and service to others go hand in hand The Body is made up of so many cells and organs. There is a need in the body of Christ that you can help meet and you can fully function when related to the others. There is no “one man show” but every individual plays a vital part in the collective body of Christ. Every member of the Highland Church has unique gifts and abilities. No one can take your place! Nor can you take another’s place.

Don't ignore the church. Someone wisely remarked that "the soul that is alone, is like the burning coal that is alone." He is right. Solitary Christian or ministry does not work well. People who believe are also people that belong. You may be part of the 50 plus ministries that meet at Highland Church but you must be part of the corporate body where all cultures, colors, class and categories join hands in corporate worship as ONE BODY. Your leadership or your ministry cannot take the place of the church gathering. Never forget the first symptom of spiritual decline is usually inconsistence attendance at the corporate worship.
